The region has seen the creation of many companies in the logistics sector mainly thanks to its strategic position for goods transportation, both due to its proximity to France and Barcelona and its infrastructure.
The main logistics companies are based at the CIM la Selva and in the urban area of Figueres. Another important element is the phased development of the Logis Empordà/Logis intermodal el Far-Vilamalla logistics centre project, the medium-term outcome of which is expected to be the installation of important companies in the logistics sector.
The industrial sector is led by manufacturers of mechanical and electrical equipment, which foster synergy between the different companies and provide the region with a value chain that makes it a very attractive location for new companies in the sector to set up in.
This is a very diverse and well established sector with a strong tradition in the area. In recent years, considerable effort has been invested in promoting the competitiveness of this business community by fostering innovation and internationalisation.
The food industry is the region’s second most important sector, with continuously growing turnover and exports.
With the installation and consolidation of important business groups, another notable aspect is the focus on high-quality agricultural food products, as demonstrated by the existence of two Empordà Designation of Origin for wine and olives, as well as the Poma de Girona protected geographical indication (PGI). In addition, the restaurant sector is becoming increasingly important, with several establishments positioning themselves as culinary world leaders.
In the health and life sciences sector, the region is home to some important and highly international pharmaceutical companies.
We have a powerful pharmaceutical industry that holds internationally recognised quality seals. In addition, the healthcare system and large hospitals and clinics in the region attract innovation in pharmaceutical products and medical technologies.
Girona and Figueres are regions with a very strong tradition of tourism. The sector benefits from its strategic location close to the French border and the tourism development of the Costa Brava, one of Catalonia’s main tourist areas.
In addition, the varied landscapes and extensive range of cultural and leisure activities make this a region that offers excellent quality of life, giving it great potential to consolidate its position. The two cities also boast two very popular tourist attractions: Girona’s Historic Quarter and the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres.
